Will’s Entry: Rumbly in my Tummy

23 Sep

Yesterday was a hard day.  I had Physical Therapy before lunch (not a bad thing) and then someone scheduled a meeting at 12:30.  I told Kristin that I wouldn’t be joining her and figured I’d pick up something from the caterers downstairs that provide lunches.  After the meeting was over I went and they said they were out of food.  Well, no big deal; I’ll go to Subway.  When I put my key into the trunk to get my helmet, the key snapped off.  So I had 3 fruit rollups for lunch.  We made up for it by going to Wingers for dinner though and that was a happy time.

Now here’s a real quandry.  I’ve heard numerous people say that BYU was overconfident for its game against FSU, that they looked past them and such.  Personally, the logical side of my mind cringes when people say this just because I don’t think there is evidence of such.  Now how could we get evidence of this?  You couldn’t ask the players about their confidence.  Athletes are “trained” to offer answers that don’t reflect their true feelings.

I considered asking for predictions on margin of victory/defeat with a varying rewards depending on how close the guess was.  That wouldn’t work because predicting a close loss to a great team SHOULD indicate more confidence than a close win against a horrible team.

In conclusion I would get the predictions on margin and compare them to the betting spreads to determine confidence.  It would then be fun to compare confidence levels versus the actual outcome.  That’s my plan – now where’s my funding?
